Meet the team: Jim Stewart

Meet Jim Stewart, Underwriter at Braemar Finance. Jim Stewart has been with the business since 2015. In this Q&A he tells us a little bit more about his role and himself.

Briefly explain your role (include any areas of specialism)

It’s my job to assess credit applications from our Direct and Broker teams, judge risk, promote lending, act as the main point of contact for policy and direction to our sales and operations teams and I liaise with other credit teams to advise on shared exposure. I also act as a point of contact for our Broker clients, putting a face (or rather a voice) to the underwriting team at Braemar Finance.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

Variety – two days are never the same.  I could be reviewing personal credit scoring models on a Monday, funding business loans on a Tuesday and offering on assets on a Wednesday!  We cover many markets, serving not just the professions but the people behind them, and their lifestyles.

The most interesting thing I’ve had the opportunity to fund in my career was a high art painting for a hotelier. The artist in question was involved in the Olympics design as well as album artwork for international music stars – well, Justin Bieber…

Which three words would you use to describe yourself and why?

Tall, dark and sarcastic. I am known around the office for a rather dark humour, and at 6’3” I’m certainly tall.

Can you describe a professional achievement/highlight?

Professionally, I am most proud of being asked to share and demonstrate my knowledge – it’s incredibly validating, as well as being able to share experience. I have had the opportunity a few times in my career to do this and it always leaves a strong sense of achievement

What are people unlikely to know about you?

That I am a fully qualified sommelier and mixologist.

When you’re not in work, what do you like to do?

I’m an avid reader, usually going through two books a week. Currently I am re-reading Foundation by Isaac Asimov and have started Why we get the wrong politicians by Isabel Hardman.  I enjoy spending time with my son, who is five and runs me ragged between his games and his karate attempts to beat up his old man! Other than that, I enjoy the usual good food, good drink and good company, and hanging out with my cat Kobayashi.
